XnResize overview

XnResize is an image resizing application designed to reduce image resolution, convert formats and process multiple files in a single operation. The software targets users who need to prepare photographs and graphic files for sharing, storage or web use by lowering pixel dimensions and exporting to size-efficient formats. XnResize is distributed as freeware for private and educational use and is available for Windows, macOS and Linux (64-bit editions where supported).

Supported formats and compatibility

XnResize supports a broad set of input and output formats. The application accepts common and professional image types including JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF, WEBP, PSD, JPEG2000, OpenEXR, camera RAW variants, HEIC, PDF, DNG and CR2. The program can read more than 500 image formats and export to roughly 70 output formats, enabling conversion workflows between legacy and modern formats. XnResize includes multilingual support and runs on Windows 7 through Windows 10 (and later Windows builds), macOS 10.5+ and Linux 64-bit editions.

Batch processing and workflow

XnResize is intended for batch resizing tasks. Users can add multiple files or a whole folder, arrange inputs via drag-and-drop and define a single processing profile to apply to all selected images. Batch options include explicit width and height adjustments, application of predefined size presets and choice of output filenames. The batch model is designed to streamline repetitive resizing jobs such as preparing galleries, social-media uploads, smartphone libraries or email attachments.

Resizing mechanics and image quality

The application exposes controls for downscaling and upscaling images with attention to pixel operations. XnResize reduces file dimensions by removing or subsampling pixels when downscaling, and interpolates new pixels when enlarging an image. The product documentation notes the inherent limitations of enlarging images: added pixel data is generated from existing pixels and can produce blurrier results than the original. XnResize therefore emphasizes that capturing at higher native resolution and then downsizing is the preferred practice for maintaining detail when producing smaller derivatives.

Metadata and orientation handling

XnResize preserves common metadata standards and provides options for metadata handling. The tool supports EXIF, IPTC and XMP metadata, allowing users to retain camera data, captions and rights information when exporting. The application also offers automatic correction of image orientation based on embedded orientation tags, which helps maintain correct visual presentation without manual rotation prior to resizing.

User interface and controls

The interface is designed with file list and output configuration panels, enabling quick adjustments to output size, format and filename conventions. Users can choose predefined sizes or specify custom dimensions, set output directories and select naming templates. Drag-and-drop support simplifies adding files and folders. The interface places batch controls and format options within the same workflow so that conversion and resizing are handled in one pass.

Performance and platform considerations

XnResize is implemented for cross-platform use and is distributed as an installer and a zipped portable option for Windows, a DMG for macOS and package plans for Linux where available. Performance varies with image size, number of files and system resources. The application is capable of processing large numbers of high-resolution images but will be subject to the same hardware limitations common to batch image processing: memory consumption, disk throughput and CPU usage during format conversion and resampling operations.

Installation and licensing

XnResize is provided as freeware for private and educational use without bundled adware or spyware. Download options include a 64-bit installer and a zipped program folder for Windows, a macOS DMG for Intel/AMD macOS systems and planned Linux 64-bit builds. The publisher requests donations to support continued development. Licensing terms for commercial deployment are stated by the developer; organizations requiring commercial use should review the site or contact the developer to confirm licensing requirements beyond the provided freeware terms.

Support and resources

Support for XnResize is primarily community and forum based. The developer maintains a user forum where discussions, troubleshooting and feature requests can be posted. Documentation on supported formats, downloads and related XnView applications (XnConvert and XnView MP) is available on the product site. Changelog entries and version history are provided for tracking updates to the application.
